Alpine Coasters

Postby phantom309 » Thu Apr 11, 2013 9:31 am

An alpine coaster is a long chute on the side of a hill, usually built by ski resorts to supplement summer income. A wheeled cart is used to navigate the slide. The ride is similar to a bobsled ride, except that it rolls over a smooth track — generally cement, stainless steel, or fiberglass — rather than sliding on ice. The cart accommodates one or two passengers and is controlled by a hand brake located between the rider's legs. Pulling the hand brake handle causes the cart to stop; pushing or letting go of the handle causes the brakes to release, allowing the cart to accelerate. The ride is unique among amusement park rides in that the rider has complete control over his or her speed and ride experience. With this control comes responsibility: the rider must ensure the cart is not going too fast, otherwise the cart may overturn around curves, leading to possible injury or death.
Here is an example of an Alpine Coaster

I love these things! I haven't been on any proper ones like in the video, just the bobsled style ones in the trough. Still very fun and you feel really exposed on them.

I love the look of these Coasters, sadly I haven't yet been to a theme park which has one, out of curiosity Thekingin64 where did you ride the one you have been on?

I've been on 2. The first 1 I went on is at the Llandudno Ski Centre which claims to have the longest in the UK and the other at Oakwood.

I made a POV of the Llandudno one: (Sorry that it's sideways)

I wear the best shoes. :)

EDIT: Sorted the sideways-ness. :)

Cool POV Thekingin64, I would so love to ride the one at Oakwood, which may be a possibility next season hopefully.

Tip for Oakwood: Do the Bobsled right at the start of the day as queues can get horrendous due to the terrible capacity.

These things look amazing. Annoyingly, I haven't had the chance to go on one yet. The one King posted looks well fun.
