Carowinds Amusement Park has recently released plans for a $50 million expansion that would raise park attendance to 2.5 million a year. Chain-Owner Cedar Fair has been in discussion with local city council for receiving $900,000 of incentives to aid in the expansion, paid over a three year period.
As a part of the planned expansion, Carowinds has mentioned plans for a 300 ft. tall roller coaster that would cost $30 million. While no further details have been shared at this time, it does beg the question on what manufacturer would be considered for the project - B&M or Intamin. While Cedar Fair has built numerous large-scale Intamin roller coasters (three over 300 ft.: Millennium Force, Top Thrill Dragster, Intimidator 305), recent downtime and maintenance issues have seemingly clouded Cedar Fair's relationship with Intamin. B&M famously built Leviathan in 2012, a 300 ft. giga coaster at Canada's Wonderland, in compliment to the park's previous 200 ft. hyper B&M coaster Behemoth. Cedar Fair could plan for a similar addition to Carowinds to complement their own B&M hyper coaster Intimidator. Other big ticket items include $2.5 million for water park expansion, $7 million in food court expansion, and $4 million in admissions and parking lot improvements.
Only time will tell what Cedar Fair has in store for Carowinds.
